As I've been receiving more and more commission requests, I thought I better dedicate a page to it :)
I love creating a one off, special piece of artwork. Whether it's a graphite sketch, a watercolour or acrylic on a large canvas. My favourite commissions are horses and dogs, but I've also painted goats, chickens, cows, elephants, even 6 foot flamingos!
I'm always open to single artwork commissions, so if you're after something special, feel free to get in contact with me via email here.
How does it work? I need good quality photos to work from, if I can't meet that someone special in person. We'll chat about what it is you're trying to capture. Does a particular dog for instance, have any quirks or funny attributes you'd like to come through? I create a pencil sketch for approval first before I start to paint. Unless canvas is requested, artworks are painted on 300gsm archival watercolour paper, the same I use for the artwork for my books. I'll then scan the finished painting and send you a copy so you can see the finished piece before it is collected or posted.
Pricing depends on what you would like included in the commission and amount of detail.
As an example -
A 50% deposit is required and full payment prior to delivery of artwork.
The original artwork then belongs to you, however, copyright remains with me as the artist unless negotiated otherwise (note, I very rarely sign this over). All this means is that you can't then go and print 1 million coffee cups for example, using the artwork, without prior permission :)
Below are some of the characters I've been privileged to capture over the years :)
PRIVATE CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS
I receive a lot of emails asking me if I can illustrate children's books by emerging authors or authors who are looking to self publish. Whilst I'm obviously very humbled and grateful that my work holds such appeal to warrant these requests, unfortunately I simply don't have the time to dedicate 6-8 months to a privately commissioned book, I'm really sorry. My book work is contracted through publishers or corporations. I have in the past created one or two pieces of artwork for individuals who simply want to see their beloved characters in their stories come to life as a keepsake - I am happy to consider these if time permits.
If you are a budding author traveling the road of seeking traditional publication, you don't need an illustrator anyway. Follow the submission guidelines of publishers open for submissions and if they like your story they will contract an illustrator - your manuscript must stand on it's own to start with. If you are looking at self publishing, check out the ASA (Australian Society of Authors) Recommended Rates of Pay for Book Illustrations. This is what you can expect to pay an established book illustrator. The ASA Style File is a great resource for finding an illustrator who may be available. I hope this helps and I wish you all the very best for your story.
